What I have to remember

Every year as I get ready to start the academic year, I have a ritual. I make myself read the first papers I wrote for college. I still have three or four of them, and they are...not bad. I think they earned Bs, mostly, and looking back that seems about right.
I never want to become the teacher that expects students to start where they should finish. I have to remember where I was when I entered college. I have to remember how 'tired' I thought I was from high school and how certain I was that college was just more of the same.
If I forget what I was like as a college student, then I am allowing myself to fall into the 'us' vs. 'them' mentality that hurts education. I have to remember what it was like to be on the early part of the journey.

I am a college teacher who is the son of two former college teachers. I attended a private school, I got my doctorate at a big state school, and I work at a community college. These are some of the things I think that I think.
